Note: Each layer takes up as much memory as the original model, so be sure you have enough memory to handle multiple layers. ZBrush can use virtual memory to handle many layers if it becomes necessary, but this will slow your workflow.

The selected layer is surrounded by an orange outline; any sculpting affects that layer. The eye icons can be clicked on or off to make a layer visible (affect the onscreen model) or invisible. However, the selected layer is always visible. If there are more layers than can be displayed in the list at one time, the orange scroll button to the left of the layer list can be dragged to scroll the layer list.

Intensity: A layer is effectively an independent morph target. Intensity affects the amount of the morph of the selected layer.

Below, bullet hole layer at high intensity (left) and low intensity (right).

New: Create a new layer.
Delete: Delete the currently selected layer.
Rename: Allows you to rename the currently selected layer.

The following controls affect mesh extraction from layers.

Make 3D: Makes a new subtool by comparing the selected layer to the base mesh. Areas of the layer that differ from the base mesh will be extracted into a subtool, just as if they had been masked and Tool:Subtool:Extract had been pressed. Very small differences from the base mesh will not be extracted into the subtool.
E Smt: Determines how smooth the edge of an extracted mesh will be. High smooth values will remove detail from the edges of the extracted mesh, which may or may not be what you want.
S Smt: Determines how smooth the surface of the extracted mesh will be (similar to extracting the mesh without smoothing and then using the Smooth brush on it.)
Thick: Sets the thickness of the extracted mesh. 0.01 is about right for cloth, 0.03 for leather, etc.
