ZBrush's Canvas is depth-enabled. In ZBrush, the canvas is also called a Document. Documents work similiarly to a 3D scene. They contain lights, materials and geometry. Only in the case of a ZBrush document that geometry is actually 2.5D Pixols. This allows you to work with more complex objects in a scene. However, it requires that you establish one viewpoint to work with from the beginning.

It is important to note that Documents inside of ZBrush do not contain 3D models. Saving a Document does not save a 3D model. 3D Models must be saved separately by pressing Tool: Save As.

Lights in ZBrush can be used to set the mood and tone of a scene. They cast shadows and interact materials to develop the look and feel of objects and pixols on your canvas. To learn more about Lighting inside of ZBrush click here.

Materials are used to establish the basic look and feel of objects and pixols on the ZBrush canvas. Materials are used to make something metalic or plastic. To learn more about Materials inside of ZBrush click here.

Pixols are the core of ZBrush's 2.5D canvas. They contain material, color and depth information and interact with ZBrush's real-time 2.5D rendering engine to create images. To learn more about ZBrush's unique Pixols click here.
